Tippers Built Around The Weighbridge, Not The Brochure
A tipper earns on payload and loses on downtime. That makes two specifications decisive: how much steel the body wastes by being too thick, and how much torque the driveline has at the rpm you actually pull at. This category covers both sides of that balance — 15 and 20 m³ Auman GTL bodies in T700, WKC800 or NM450 wear plate with joystick or tarpaulin covering systems, and a 400 hp 6×4 build with 12,370 kg of payload and 2,000 Nm delivered between 1000 and 1400 rpm where a loaded gradient actually needs it.
Bodies run 5,200 to 7,600 mm internal length, 2,300 to 2,350 mm width and 800 to 1,500 mm side height, on a 280, 300 or 320 mm closed-height frame, with 6 mm sides and 8 mm floors as standard or 8 mm and 10 mm for abrasive rock. Cover systems are horizontal-push or rocker-arm, both closing the load without raising the side board height — which is what keeps a working tipper legal in markets that enforce covered loads.
Six Specifications That Decide If A Tipper Earns
A tipper body that is too heavy cannot carry enough. A body that is too light becomes a repair bill at year two. The right answer sits between those two, and it is decided by the material, the loading method and the local axle rule — not by the price per unit.
On a 25,000 kg GVW 6×4 with a 12,500 kg kerb, 12,370 kg is available for cargo. Every kilogram added to the body — thicker plate, extra beams, a heavier cover system — comes out of that figure before the first load is booked.
2,000 Nm between 1000 and 1400 rpm on the Weichai WP12.400E62 is torque delivered at the speed a loaded truck climbs at. Peak power at 2,000 rpm looks better in a table and does less on a quarry exit.
Horizontal-push and rocker-arm tarpaulins close the body without raising the side boards, so the vehicle stays inside the covered-load envelope. Adding a frame to an open tipper is the fastest way to fail an inspection.
A U-shaped body with a convex mid-side profile resists outward bulging under load and discharges wet material without square corners packing it in. The trade-off is a little usable volume at the same external width.
The tarpaulin tipper sits on a 280 to 320 mm closed-height frame with a low deck, which keeps lateral stability predictable on a part-tipped or off-camber surface. Body height is a stability decision, not only a volume one.
Complete hydraulic sets from Jiaheng or Haiwo, with an optional hydraulic rear-door lock for tight sealing. A tipper ram is the single hardest-working component on the vehicle, and an unbranded set is a false economy.
Match The Body To The Material
Sand, demolition rubble and quarry rock all leave the same tipper, and each one demands a different plate and a different cover.
20 m³ tarpaulin body in T700 at 6 mm sides and 8 mm floors, loaded from a silo or a wheel loader and tipped into a customer's driveway.
8 mm sides with 10 mm floors in WKC800, on a four-longitudinal-beam frame, for loads that include rebar offcuts and concrete lumps.
NM450 abrasion-resistant plate, because the wear comes from impact and sliding abrasion rather than from tonnage. This is where a standard body fails in months.
Horizontal-push tarpaulin with a hydraulic rear-door lock for tight sealing, keeping a light, mobile load inside the body on the road.
Covered tipper for street sweepings, green waste and transfer-station loads, where odour and dust control matter as much as volume.
6×4 chassis with a 5.6 m box, sized to manoeuvre inside a site gate and still carry 12,370 kg on a legal axle load.
400 hp 6×4 with a 5.92 rear axle ratio, a 350-litre aluminium fuel tank and 12.00R20 tyres on 10 wheels — built for double-shift cycles.
Light 4×2 tippers at 5 to 20 tonnes, where a 6×4 cannot turn and the load per stop is only a few cubic metres.
Weight, Emissions And Body Conformity
Tippers are inspected on declared axle loads and on emissions more often than any other cargo type. These are the documents and tests supplied.
Body welding, frame assembly and hydraulic fitment under an ISO 9001 certified system, with a documented inspection record per unit.
China Compulsory Certification for the Foton chassis, the baseline conformity document for registration in most export markets.
GVW, kerb weight, rated payload and front and rear axle ratings stated per unit, so the body can be checked against local load rules before fabrication.
Euro 6 and China VI on the 400 hp build, using common-rail injection with DPF, DOC and Hi-SCR. Euro 3 to Euro 6 across the wider tipper range.
Full tip and lower cycle under load, rear-door lock function verified, and pressure held at working level before the unit is released.
Certificate of Conformity, Certificate of Origin, invoice, packing list and bill of lading, with an English manual and parts list.
If your national GVW limit is below 25,000 kg, the body must be resized rather than the plate re-labelled. We will say so before the order rather than after.
Tipper Builds In One Selection Table
Body volume, cover type and plate grade decide the fit. Each row links to the model page with its parameter sheet.
| Build | Body and payload | Plate and covering | Best-fit material |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 m³ Auman GTL tarpaulin tipper Largest body in the lineup | Inner body 5,200–7,600 × 2,300/2,350 × 800–1,500 mm; 20 m³ nominal | T700 / WKC800 / NM450, 6 mm sides with 8 mm floor or 8 mm with 10 mm; 2 or 4 longitudinal beams | Sand, gravel, grain, biomass and covered construction material |
| 15 m³ joystick tarp tipper Joystick-controlled cover | 15 m³ nominal body, sized between the light tippers and the 20 m³ build | High-strength steel U-shaped body, joystick-operated tarp system, Jiaheng or Haiwo hydraulic set | Municipal bulk, site clearance and mixed loads where one operator covers the body |
| 6×4 heavy duty tipper General heavy build | Heavy-duty 6×4 configuration for full-load tipping on site and road | Reinforced steel body and subframe, rear tipping, matched to the chassis frame rating | Construction spoil, aggregate delivery, general heavy haulage |
| 400 hp GTL 6×4 tipper BJ3259Y6DLL-02 | 25,000 kg GVW, 12,500 kg kerb, 12,370 kg payload; box 5.6 × 2.35 × 1.5 m | Weichai WP12.400E62, 2,000 Nm, Fast 12-speed, 5.92 ratio, 350 L tank, Euro 6 | Mining haul roads, urban construction, quarry and aggregate transport |
| Light 4×2 tipper Aumark 190 hp | Light-duty body on a 4×2 chassis, sized for 5 to 20 tonne payload work | 190 hp diesel, manual transmission, steel body with rear tipping | Narrow collection routes, small-site clearance, landscaping and utility work |
Body volume is internal. Payload assumes the standard body, a full tank and no crane or tailgate; each addition reduces the legal cargo weight.
Body, Subframe And Hydraulics Built Against One Chassis Drawing
A tipper fails at the interfaces. The subframe has to carry the body's loaded weight into the chassis rails without stress concentrations, the ram has to be matched to the body length, and the PTO has to drive the pump at the speed the ram needs. Buy those from three suppliers and the fourth conversation is a warranty dispute at the point where the subframe cracked.
We quote chassis, subframe, body, cover system, ram and PTO as one unit, with the body sized to your legal axle load rather than to a nominal volume. Plate grades are T700, WKC800 and NM450, hydraulic sets come from Jiaheng or Haiwo, and the cover is horizontal-push or rocker-arm depending on body length and cycle count.
The chassis base is the Foton Auman GTL programme, produced through the Daimler-Foton joint venture in Beijing — a partnership covered by Reuters and Automotive News Europe — which is why the cab, brake and axle architecture follows European conventions. Engines come from Weichai and from Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Company, Cummins' largest engine joint venture worldwide. Foton also runs more than 220 outlets across Africa with 12 knock-down plants, 43 parts warehouses and 8 training centres, per ChinaTrucks.org delivery reporting. Every unit carries a one-year or 30,000 km warranty and 24-hour online after-sales support.

Tipper Fleet Orders On Record
Publicly documented heavy-truck fleet deliveries used for construction and mining haulage. Client type, date, quantity and source are given so each record can be checked.
100 Foton Auman heavy trucks delivered in Addis Ababa to a multinational working in transport, construction and mining, specified for African road conditions around fuel efficiency, durability and load capacity. The same customer has bought more than 400 Foton vehicles since 2013, and a knock-down plant with an anticipated 2,500-unit annual capacity was due to start production that July.
150 Auman R heavy trucks — the largest single truck order in Ghana that year — delivered to a major industrial customer. Units ran Cummins engines with roughly 5 percent better fuel efficiency than comparable models, some with ZF automated manual transmissions, and all with telematics included. Foton's heavy-duty sales in Ghana rose more than 500 percent year on year in the first half of 2025.
100 medium and heavy trucks delivered to a major Senegalese construction company working across building, roadwork, public projects and urban planning — the first collaboration between the buyer and the supplier. The order mixed Auman R and Auman C models, chosen for load capacity and performance on West African road conditions during a period of rising infrastructure spending.
What Buyers Ask Before Signing
Fourteen questions on volume, plate grade, payload and cover systems, answered with the parameters.
15 m³ or 20 m³ — how do I choose?
ANSWERFrom your legal payload divided by the density of what you carry. A 20 m³ body hauling sand at roughly 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre is already 32 tonnes, far beyond a 12,370 kg payload — so the volume is only useful for light material. For dense loads the smaller body fills to legal weight sooner and saves fuel.
Which wear plate should I specify?
ANSWERT700 for general bulk where weight matters, WKC800 for mixed construction material with occasional heavy impact, and NM450 where rock or slag is dropped from a conveyor. Thickness pairs are 6 mm sides with 8 mm floors as standard, or 8 mm with 10 mm for the severest duty.
Horizontal push or rocker arm tarpaulin?
ANSWERHorizontal push for bodies up to 7,600 mm and high daily cycle counts, because the sheet runs on a rail with no side clearance needed. Rocker arm for shorter bodies and simpler maintenance. Neither raises the side board height, so both satisfy covered-load rules.
What is a joystick tarp system?
ANSWERA hydraulic cover system operated from a single joystick inside or beside the cab, so the driver can open and close the body without climbing onto the deck. On a multi-drop aggregate round that is several minutes per load recovered, and one fall risk removed.
How much can the 400 hp 6×4 legally carry?
ANSWER12,370 kg, from a 25,000 kg GVW against a 12,500 kg kerb, with a 5.6 × 2.35 × 1.5 m box. That is the manufacturer figure for the standard body and a full tank; a heavier body, a crane or a tailgate reduces it, and the reduction must be declared.
Why does the rear axle ratio matter?
ANSWERA 5.92 ratio trades top speed for pulling force at the wheels, which is the right trade for a loaded tipper on gradients and haul roads. A tall highway ratio on the same engine will feel gutless at 25 tonnes and will not return better fuel in that duty.
Is the U-shaped body worth the volume loss?
ANSWERYes for wet or cohesive material, because there is no square corner to pack into and the convex mid-side resists bulging under load. For dry, free-flowing aggregate the difference is marginal, and a flat-sided body gives slightly more volume at the same external width.
What is the hydraulic rear-door lock for?
ANSWERIt clamps the tailgate shut under hydraulic pressure instead of relying on gravity or a manual latch, so fine or wet material does not seep out on the road. It is an option on the tarpaulin tipper and is worth taking wherever odour, dust or spillage attracts enforcement.
What emissions are available?
ANSWEREuro 6 and China VI on the 400 hp build with common-rail injection, DPF, DOC and Hi-SCR; Euro 3 through Euro 6 on the wider tipper range. Fix the bracket at order — re-homologating a built chassis for a stricter market is rarely economic.
Left-hand drive and cab specification?
ANSWERLeft-hand drive is standard. The GTL flat-roof cab has power windows, central locking, electric mirrors and automatic air conditioning. For mining and long-haul duty a sleeper cab is available and is worth the small payload penalty.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
ANSWEROne unit, with mixed volumes and plate grades in one batch. Around 15 working days in low season and one to three months at peak, counted from deposit and drawing approval. Body fabrication is the variable, not the chassis.
How are tippers shipped?
ANSWERRoRo or break-bulk, because of overall height with the body fitted. Bodies can also ship as knock-down kits for mounting on locally sourced chassis, which reduces freight and can avoid finished-vehicle duty in some markets.
What warranty and parts support apply?
ANSWEROne year or 30,000 km, whichever comes first, with 24-hour online after-sales support and factory-cost parts. Chassis coverage follows Foton policy where that is longer, and the African parts network of 43 warehouses is the practical backstop for a working tipper.
What do you need to quote a tipper accurately?
ANSWERMaterial type and density, how it is loaded, your legal GVW and axle limits, route gradient and surface, the local covered-load rule, emission bracket and destination port. Those seven answers fix body volume, plate grade, cover system and rear axle ratio.
Send The Material And Your Legal Axle Load
Material density and legal payload decide body volume, not the other way round. Send both with your loading method and destination port for drawings and a landed-cost quotation.
Plate grade, cover system, rear-door lock and fleet livery are fixed before fabrication.
